A tribute to 'Kalvi Thanthai'
Kumaraswami Kamaraj/ Kamachi - popularly acknowledged as "Kingmaker" in Indian politics across the world. He was a most respected leader of Indian National Congress. He served as its National President from 1964 to 1967 and as State Congress chief from 1946 to 1952.
He dominated the Indian politics for many years since his resingnation as Chief minister of Madras province in 1963. He was not just a politician but also a freedom fighter. He entred politics with his stunt in "Home Rule Movement". After that he actively participated in every movements like Non-cooperation movement(1922), Nagpur Flag Sathyagragha(1923) and Salt Sathyagragha(1930). By this way he quickly emerged as a leader in Congress and gained the attention of national leaders.
Kamaraj is not just a name. It is a history. He took revolutionary steps in the feild of education. There has been several achievements during his period as chief minister.

- Construction of schools in every villages and towns; Ensuring primary education
- Free ans compulsory education
- Rising the literacy rate from 7% to 36%.
- Mid day meals schems - a tremendous success
- Introduction of uniforms to set aside caste and religions in schools
- Establishment of IIT Madras
- Concentraion on irrigation works
- Construction of dams
- Creating employments via industries - Neiveli Lignite Corporation was establised during his time.
He sacrificed his Chief Minister post for the sake of the party and took stint in national politics. During the crisis after Nehru's death he made Lal Bahadur Sastri and followed by Indira Gandhi as Prime Ministers. It should be noted that at both instances he turned down the offer to became Prime Minister of India. Thats why he is refered as Kingmaker.
It was at the peak of his political career, he had a major fall out with Indira Gandhi and the Congress spilits. The seperation of congress gave a jolt to Kamaraj's image within the congress factions. Yet he remained in politics serving as Member of Parliament. He lost his mass appeal in his final days of in politics and Syndicate Congress under his failed miserably in all elections.(He never lose the love and respect but the appeal).
A man who rose from the scrubbles, became head of a state, brought revolutionary changes, created two Prime Ministers to world's biggest democratic nation, dominated a grand old party and later became nothing died with just less than 200 penny in his pocket. Kamarajar is a real hero, A Legend.
Today 15.07.2018 his birthday is an occation to remember him as Master of Governance, Father of Education, Developer of Tamil state and last but not the least a 'Kingmaker'.
