One year of EPS Government
Author: Arun Ravi
The widely expected thought was that EPS government may fall in one month or two.But the fact is that it has successfully completed one year despite losing its majority 5 months ago.It was a greatest achievement of EPS and ADMK.
Edappadi K.Palanisamy popularly known as 'EPS', is often termed within ADMK as a 'doer' and a background player. He steadily grew up in ranks within the party and became Minister for the first time in 2011.
His choice for CM post is not unexpected as his name had done rounds along with Panneerselvam and Sengottaiyan when Jayalalitha was convicted in 2014.But at that time the scenario was not in hisfavour. But in 2017 as OPS was ousted there was just a bipolar contest between Sengottaiayan and EPS. In the race EPS won over Sengottaiayan due to his influence in the Kongu belt.
Problems faced:
The first major problem was the floor test, in which EPS managed to win. Although there was a good beginning, the journey turned bizarre soon. The government has to face the internal tussles within the ADMK faction. After the expulsion of T.T.V.Dinakaran it also faced severe pressure from his faction too. In August both factions of ADMK led by OPS and EPS were merged.
But then the situation even worsen with its 18 legislators withdrew support for the government.Another major setback for the government was its inability to get exemption from NEET. Moreover the government faced severe criticisms from opposition for serving as subordinate to the centre.
Another major blow to the government was the R.K.Nagar by election loss.It was the first ever by election for the government since its formation in 2016.
In spite of the failures the government also accomplished to some extend. Now the government is planning for Global Investor's Meet which was earlier held in Jayalalitha's reign.Another notewhorthy fact was though the government lost its majority it was stable and can predict it can complete the full 5 year term.
