Background:
This 10,000 crore estimated project run through Salem, Dharmapuri,Thiruvanamalai and Kancheepuram districts. The entire stretch of the road is estimated to be 273.3 Kms. On an average the project needs 2,343 hectares of lands in five districts. It covers the reserve forest areas and agricultural feilds. If this project materializes, the travel time is expected to be cut shorted to 3-4 hrs(appx).
Proposed express way(8 way lane)

Critisism and Protests:
There has been widespread critisism and protest since Feburary. In Feburary 2018, State and Union government proposed 10,000 crore Green expressway project along Salem-Chennai. Many social activists and environmental activists consider this project as a great threat to the environment. Moreover the landowners, who were mostly farmers opposed  acquring their lands. In the wake of protests, activists Piyush Manush, Valarmathi and film actor Mansoor Ali Khan were arrested. Not only that, people spreading news against the project through socila media were also arrested.
The government has learned heavy lessons from 2017 Jallikattu protests and 2018 Thootukudi anti-sterlite protests. With iron hand the government and police work to maintain order.

Present Scenario:
Although government has claimed  that the project will develop the state's economy, there are other things that should be considered.
  • For the sake of this project, hectares of reserved forest cover is to be destroyed.
  • Though the government assured that the cut down tress were replaced, there arises a question how many tress were replaced in the past for laying roads.
  • This lead to the destruction of the natural resources and the endangered wildlives.
  • More over the farmers were unhappy to just leave their agricultural lands.

WHAT WILL THE FARMERS DO WITH THE COMPENSATION?

The government should reconsider the project. Atleast the government should hold talks with the native people. They should also analyse about the alternative way for the projct, the experts were proposing.
