The Sterlite Copper Factory is a matter of issue since two decades in thoothukidi. Now all of us speaking about Sterlite and its ban. But it is a problem of a life time. The first opposition came when the factory was first established. It was a part of 'Vedhandha Groups'. The factory supplies nearly 35% - 45% copper to whole India. Not only copper it also produce other byproducts from the gas released from the production process. There were many wide spread protests which failed to draw media attentions.

All that glitters is not gold

The first major incident happened in 2013. The malfunctions in the system led to gas leak which pollute the entire atmosphere. Following the gas leak people suffer eye irritation, breathing trouble and unconsciousness. It lead to serious health problems like cancer mostly throat cancer. It is said that all houses in Kumarattiyapuram have a cancer patients irrespective of ages.

Already Thoothukudi is a dry land due to frequent monsoon failure. The major source of water is the ground water and the declining water bodies. The wastes from the factory is directly dumped into the ground leading to contamination of ground water. The excessive dumping of copper waste led to infertility of agricultural land. Year by year the it is getting ready to be an unsuitable place for habitation.

Now for the past few days the entire media focus is on Thoothukudi. What makes the media to give attention to this problem which did not speak about it in last 10 years?

The Uprising: Yes it the people's Uprising. The entire Chidambaram Nagar bus stand is crowded which is no usual and echoed everywhere to ban sterlite. The children didn't gone to school for about a week, as they were the icon of the protest. Around thousands from different walks of life, mostly from urban areas gave heat to the protests. The entire Thoothukudi has been stunned to see the flood in the dry land.

Time has changed. People realized that silence will not be a solution. Atleast in this 11th hour they realized to entre the battle field to fight for them. This should continue. Last week Maharastra witnessed a Farmer Uprising.
