War of Waters
Author: Arun Ravi
The war for waters is not just in India. In fact it is predicted that, if World War III materializes, it will be mainly for water. The historical verdict of Supreme Court which came on 16th Feb 2018 did not ceasefire the ongoing water war. Instead it gave stimulus to widespread protests across the two states. The court also gave a deadline for Central Government to implement the verdict. But the Center trespasses the deadline with absolute silence. Many viewed that the BJP led government delayed the implementation was due to upcoming assembly elections in Karnataka.
Supreme Court's direction:
On 9th April Supreme Court directed and urged the center to draft the 'scheme' by May 3. But the Central government petitioned to the court to extend the dead line for drafting the scheme. The government of Tamil Nadu strongly opposed the petition stating it as betrayal for Tamil people. Later the central government withdrew the petition from the court.
The real fact was that no one including the both the state governments were keen on implementing the court's verdict. While ruling congress in Karnataka is battling to win the election, the ADMK government in Tamil Nadu is struggling to keep it away from elections. So, these parties don't have much time for concentrating on these problems. The BJP led NDA government at center is playing its cards in safe zone and remain silent. Today(3.5.18) is the last day for Central government to submit the draft scheme in Supreme court.
Until we remain as mute spectators, the government too do the same........
